The story

When a pregnant woman's father travels five hours by train to bring her the braised pork she craves, he plates it on a fine porcelain dish his mother-in-law, Georgette James, prizes. She slaps his hand, calls his cooking slop, and leaves him bleeding and apologizing. Her husband, Edgar James, sides with his mother, telling the father that guests who touch what isn't theirs are stealing, then dumps the rest of the pork into the trash.

In three months of his mother living in the home, Edgar has never once defended his wife, though the apartment was bought outright with her own money before the marriage. Now she quietly calls a divorce lawyer and a moving company, determined that if her father cannot use a single plate there, the family can forget about living in it too.

Opening

The moment she found out, she flew into a rage and slapped the back of his hand.

"That is a fine porcelain plate my son brought back from his trip. I don't even use it myself, and you had the nerve to pile your slop on it."

"A perfectly good piece of art, ruined because of you!"

My father froze where he stood. His hand was bleeding where a shard had cut him, but all he did was keep his head down and apologize.

I looked at my husband, sure he would stand up for my dad.

Instead, he said:

"Dad, my mom's words might be rough, but she's got a point."
