The story
For three years, Faith has endured her husband Gary's indifference, his late-night gaming and his cold dismissal of her nervous exhaustion. But when Lindsay, his college junior, moves in, Gary tiptoes through the house to protect her sleep, silencing even the housekeeper for her sake. Watching him, Faith realises his tenderness was never careless — it simply never belonged to her.
She packs a suitcase and walks out, leaving behind the wedding photo and the scarf he once gave her. Gary calls her dramatic and orders her to attend his mother's birthday dinner. There, Lindsay sits beside him, and the family urges Faith to hand her a job at her firm. Faith must decide what she still owes a marriage that has already let her go.
Opening
Gary just waved me off impatiently, calling me dramatic before turning right back to his microphone to shout at his teammates.
But the very next morning, Lindsay—his college junior who was temporarily crashing at our house—slept in late after pulling an all-nighter. Gary didn't just shut off every gaming console; he practically tiptoed around the house.
When Martha, our housekeeper, accidentally dropped a glass, his face immediately darkened.
