The story
One day, Madison finds herself connected by video call to Julian Lorde, her husband from five years ago. On screen he is radiant, celebrating the day she agreed to be his girlfriend and vowing to spend his life treating her right. She turns the camera toward the bed, where the Julian of the present lies tangled with another woman, Trisha Walker.
She ends the call and sends him the truth: their happily ever after never comes, only divorce papers. The younger Julian floods her phone with desperate denials, insisting he could never hurt her. She answers with the betrayals still ahead of him, including Cammie, the school bully he once rescued her from, and the birthday he spent with her instead.
Meanwhile the present Julian towels off and asks, tenderly, why she is upset, certain she will never leave. Madison hands the younger Julian the divorce papers to review, and one clause about a miscarriage brings back the hospital night she faced alone.
Opening
“Madison, you said yes to being my girlfriend today! I couldn’t be happier!
“We’ll still be this happy five years from now, right? I have promised to spend the rest of my life treating you right.”
On screen, Julian Lorde smiled with such confidence.
With downcast eyes, I didn’t say a word.
