The story
Tyler Youngblood, a twelve-year-old boy, is dying of kidney failure and needs a transplant. His father, Flynn Youngblood, is pressured by his wife, Ruth Lister, to donate one of his own kidneys. On the morning of the surgery, Flynn switches off his phone and stays away, and Tyler loses the window for treatment.
Flynn remembers a previous life in which he agreed to the operation, watched his health collapse, and died of kidney failure while Ruth never offered her own kidney. Now he refuses, pointing out that Ruth is Tyler's mother and a healthy match. Ruth, her mother Demi Newell, and her assistant Jacob Chapman turn the hospital corridor against him, while Tyler begs his father to save him.
As the crowd condemns Flynn, a message from his cousin Keith Greene reveals what Ruth has been hiding, and Flynn begins to question why she was always so eager for him to be the one on the operating table.
Opening
My son, Tyler Youngblood, has a failing kidney. He needs a kidney transplant. My wife, Ruth Lister, asks me to donate one of mine.
On the day of the surgery, I turn off my phone and disappear. My entire family frantically searches for me, and I don't show up until four hours later.
Because of the delay, Tyler misses the optimal treatment window and tragically…
