The story
Owen Lockhart's younger brother, Jude, is obsessed with Owen's girlfriend, Kendra Sable, and threatens suicide whenever he is denied. To keep the peace, Owen's parents and Kendra devise a game of mystery boxes: whoever draws the slip marked "Skip" loses the date, and the other takes Kendra out. Owen refuses at first, but Kendra insists it is only a way to calm Jude.
Owen always draws first, and he always loses. He watches Jude take Kendra to dinner and even pose for wedding photos, until he finds them at a jewelry store with a marriage certificate while his parents happily help them choose rings. Jude admits the boxes were rigged so every slip read "Skip", and Kendra warns him to keep quiet so Owen never finds out.
Owen has already accepted a transfer and booked a flight out of town, ready to leave his family to the life they chose. At dinner, his father brings out the boxes again, and Jude presses a knife to his neck when Owen refuses to play.
Opening
My younger brother, Jude Lockhart, is so obsessed with my girlfriend, Kendra Sable, that he's become mentally unstable. He threatens to kill himself every few days.
Desperate to keep Jude from hurting himself, my parents and Kendra come up with a twisted little game. They put together a series of mystery boxes. Whoever draws the box marked "Skip" loses the date, while the other person gets to take Kendra out.
I refuse to play along at first, but Kendra reassures me that it's only a way to keep Jude calm.
