The story
At a post-exam party, a game of Never Have I Ever turns cruel. Freya Gilbert announces her guaranteed admission to Northbridge, then declares she has a boyfriend and kisses Alvin in front of everyone. Letitia Winfield, called Lettie, watches the boy she grew up with let it happen without a glance her way. The room's laughter turns on her, and the truth spills out: Alvin deliberately cooked the meal that sent her to the hospital, costing her the competition and the admission slot, all so Freya could take it.
Alvin offers no denial, only that the outcome is the same either way. When Letitia flees, he texts her to come back and not give them something to laugh about. She returns, and a bucket of ice water and a roomful of mockery await her. Freya reveals it was a bet, then takes the jade charm Alvin has worn since childhood, the pledge he once said they would exchange on their wedding day.
Letitia kneels on the cold floor, bleeding and soaked, as Alvin walks out with Freya. She checks into a hotel rather than face her father, and messages from Alvin are waiting.
Opening
Post-exam party. Someone suggested Never Have I Ever.
Freya Gilbert went first.
"I got guaranteed admission to Northbridge. Didn't even take the college entrance exams."
The private room erupted in whoops.
