The story
Every time Wesley brings a young man home for his wife Caroline, she has always frozen him out, paid the boy off and sent him away. This time he goes further: his pregnant mistress Sophie wants their child legitimized, so he proposes a temporary divorce and tells Caroline she may as well enjoy the college boy he has installed in the house. His friends assume she will do what she always does, but Caroline smiles and agrees, letting Evan stay.
Behind the arrangement lies a marriage already hollowed out by old resentments, late nights and a past fracture neither has forgiven. Caroline signs the divorce papers, yet she is no longer the proud woman who treated every man as contamination. As Sophie moves in and Wesley watches, his casual cruelty begins to lose its certainty.
A house full of guests, bets and whispers waits to see whether Caroline will finally stop playing the part of the untouchable wife.
Opening
"I need a thrill, and you need company," he would say, his tone perfectly casual. "We both get what we want, Caroline. Nobody gets to play the victim here."
But this last time, he played his hand too far.
He brought another twenty-something kid to the house and sat me down, using that perfectly measured, reasonable voice he saved for board meetings.
"Birth control failed. Sophie's pregnant. She's refusing to keep the baby unless I legitimize it and give the kid my last name. We’re going to file for a temporary divorce."
