The story
When rogues mistake her for her adopted sister, Jocelyn Ashwood is taken and given three calls to raise a ransom of three hundred dollars. Her father curses her, her brother Damine dismisses her plea, and her fiancé Rowan blocks her number. No one pays, and the rogues kill her, folding her body into a suitcase and throwing it in the river.
A month later, Damine, a pack forensic, examines a decomposed female victim. As he works, he speaks of his adopted sister Sera, who he believes donated a cornea to save his sight, and of Jocelyn, the ungrateful daughter who vanished. He does not know the cornea was Jocelyn's, arranged before she was taken, or that Sera lured the rogues to her.
An amulet engraved with the "Jo" of Jocelyn's name falls from the body. Before Damine can look closely, a call from Sera interrupts him, and Rowan's cold voice declares that Jocelyn can die out there for all he cares.
Opening
Before the rogues killed me, they gave me three phone calls for help.
If anyone was willing to give me three hundred dollars, I could live.
For the first call, I dialed my father.
Father didn't listen to a word I said. He immediately unleashed a torrent of curses.
"Where the hell are you? Get your ass back home right now for your sister's birthday!"
For the second call, I dialed my brother.
