The story
Ten-year-old Vienna is deaf and wears hearing aids. Her mother, Florence, insists she walk home alone to toughen up, comparing her unfavourably to her cousin Sadie. Before school lets out, Sadie takes Vienna's hearing aid, leaving her in silence as she follows the crowd toward a small intersection.
A car spins out on the icy road, its horn blaring. Everyone scatters except Vienna, who cannot hear it. She is struck; her body lies bleeding while her spirit rises above the street, able to hear the voices around her again. A classmate, Mia, recognises her and calls her mother, but Florence dismisses the report as another of Vienna's lies and performances.
Floating above, Vienna recalls her father's departure, her mother's cold punishments, the fever that cost her hearing, and the way Sadie's arrival turned Florence's love away from her. At home, Florence and Sadie eat dinner seasoned with the cilantro Vienna is allergic to, and Florence says she does not care whether Vienna returns.
Opening
"You're ten. Everyone else can do it. Why can't you? If you were even half as capable as your cousin, I wouldn't have to worry so much."
I shook my head and signed, [I can't hear. Crossing streets isn't safe.]
She gave me that look. Total disappointment.
Then she walked off with my cousin, Sadie.
What Mom didn't know was that before school let out, Sadie had stopped me.
Said she was helping Mom make me independent.
Then she snatched my hearing aid.
Now the whole world was silent.
