The story
At every family dinner, Stephanie is measured against her sister Jessica and found wanting. Her mother, Carol Jensen, calls her lazy for quitting a real job three years ago to sit home staring at a screen, while Jessica, a civil servant, wears designer coats and takes the praise. Even her husband, Mark, says nothing in her defense, and his mother, Barbara Grant, urges her to find respectable office work. What none of them know is that Stephanie is the creator behind an online following of millions, and the small trophy on her shelf is the top award in her industry.
When Jessica demands that Stephanie quietly produce a promotional video for her city department, Stephanie does the work and receives no thanks. The video goes viral, and Jessica takes the credit, telling the family an agency made it. As the relatives toast Jessica's ambition, Stephanie leaves the table, and a call from Mr. Alistair reminds her that the industry gala is approaching, where she is to be the anchor of the evening.
Opening
My mother, Carol Jensen, lobbed the question across the heavy linen tablecloth, and the sudden quiet made me feel the weight of twenty-something pairs of eyes settling on me.
I set down my chopsticks. I didn't say a word.
This was the annual, obligatory family dinner.
Aunts, uncles, cousins—we were packed into a private room at a mid-tier catering hall.
My mother lived for these gatherings. The larger the audience, the grander her performance.
"Look at your sister, Jessica," she declared, pointing to the woman seated next to the head of the table.
