The story
A young woman keeps finding her dormmate, Yvonne, squatting at the door in the small hours, rearranging every pair of shoes so the tips point inward. She scrambles the shoes, hides them, even ties the laces together, yet each morning they are neatly turned inward again. Yvonne mumbles to the shoes as she works, and when confronted she produces a medical report for anxiety-driven OCD and calls it a harmless habit.
An online reply warns of the Guiding Ritual, an ancient rite that draws certain entities along a path toward a target. A contact named Henry studies the occult and, after seeing photos of the shoe array, confirms the ritual is real and nearly complete. He says the target feels constant cold and the sense of being watched, and that the seventh day decides everything.
She has felt both. With the final night approaching, she can only watch Yvonne and wonder why she herself was chosen.
Opening
One night, as I was making my way to the bathroom around 3 a.m., I saw my dormmate, Yvonne, squatting in front of our door. She was rearranging all our shoes so that their tips were pointed inward.
I thought it was funny, so I rearranged them to have their tips pointed outward.
The next day, I found that all of them had been positioned inward again.
