The story
On Christmas Eve, Chloe hums a lullaby to coax her feverish son, Leo, into taking his medicine. But the boy complains that his father sings better — to Miss Nina, who rests her head on his lap. The words leave Chloe frozen. When she calls her husband, Ethan, he claims he is in a meeting, yet she hears laughter and a woman's giggle behind his clipped reply.
Driving to Leo's preschool, Chloe finds Ethan in a Santa suit, laughing with Nina, the woman he once begged to marry before an arranged marriage bound him to Chloe. A decade later, he still cannot forget her. That night Chloe asks for a divorce; Ethan dismisses it as a childish tantrum. Then Nina appears at their door, weeping that she has nowhere else to go, and Ethan pries Chloe's fingers from his jacket to go to her, telling her to simply do her job and be his wife.
Opening
To coax my feverish son, Leo, to take his medicine, I started humming a lullaby.
But halfway through, his little face scrunched up in disgust. He swatted the bowl from my hand.
"Mommy, you sing terribly," he whined. "I want Daddy to sing."
Shards of porcelain scraped the back of my hand, drawing pinpricks of blood. "Don't be difficult," I scolded gently, picking up the pieces. "Your dad? He doesn't know any lullabies."
Leo let out a sleepy yawn. "He does too!" he mumbled, his eyes fluttering shut.
