The story
The summer she turns eighteen, Maya gives her virginity to Liam, the boy next door she has loved for six years, believing their night together is the start of something real. The next day she overhears him telling his friends he only used her to practice his technique before pursuing Chloe, and that Maya meant nothing to him.
Humiliated and heartbroken, Maya silently changes her college commitment from Boston to Miami, where her best friend Harper is going, and swears to keep it secret. Liam, meanwhile, pursues Chloe openly at a party, kissing her in front of everyone while Harper films it to force Maya to face the truth.
As Maya prepares to leave behind the boy she has shadowed for ten years, the bruises on her skin remind her of everything she is trying to wash away.
Opening
I endured the pain, secretly thrilled the whole night, thinking my six-year crush had finally blossomed into true love.
That was, until the next day, when I overheard his friends teasing him.
"Not bad, man. The good girl let you pop her cherry."
I felt a flush of embarrassment and was just about to quietly slip away when I heard Liam’s nonchalant reply.
"I want to go after Chloe, but I was afraid she’d think I was too inexperienced.
