The story
When her younger sister Maya is left with shattered legs after a car crash, Kylie Keyne places her in Cloudemont Retreat, the top private recovery center in Kinston. Maya's progress is slow, and the treatment keeps being extended, phase by phase. Then, during peak season at Keyne Corp, Kylie learns the card covering the care has run dry.
Winnie Booth, the manager, refuses a transfer and demands Kylie sign in person. By the time Kylie races through rush-hour traffic, the balance has hit zero and Maya has been removed from the facility. A late winter storm has just passed, and Maya, in a thin gown and no coat, is somewhere in the freezing cold without her nerve-repair medication.
At the retreat, Winnie stalls over contracts and paperwork while Maya is still out in the cold. Kylie must decide how far she will go to bring her sister back inside.
Opening
Her injuries were bad. Progress crawled. They kept extending her treatment, one phase at a time.
Early this morning, the manager called. Said the card wouldn't cover the next phase.
That's when it hit me—peak season at the company. I'd been slammed, barely breathing. I hadn't topped it up in forever.
I told her I'd transfer the money. She shut it down. Said I had to show up and sign in person before they'd extend anything.
So after work, I rushed over.
