The story
David has lived this moment before. When his wife Mona, a professor, asks for a divorce because she has fallen in love with their son's classmate, Jordan, he agrees without hesitation. In his previous life he clung to the marriage, nursed Mona through a paralyzing stroke for ten years, and was repaid with divorce, abandonment by his son Lucas, and a lonely death from illness.
This time David asks only for an even split of the assets. Mona and Lucas, certain he is powerless after twenty years as a stay-at-home father, push for two-thirds and record his consent. David lets them have it, then quietly retrieves the money Mona hid long ago at his parents' abandoned farm.
Now he is eating his fill, shedding the man he used to be, and waiting to see what the pair who wronged him will reap.
Opening
I agreed without a second’s hesitation. I had already lived through this once.
In my previous life, I had been the stubborn fool who refused to let go. I had clung to the wreckage of our marriage, only for her young lover to be whisked away into a marriage of convenience by his own family. The fallout broke her. She spiraled into alcoholism and eventually suffered a massive stroke that left her paralyzed.
For ten years, I was her shadow. I cared for her every need, day in and day out, until I finally nursed her back onto her feet.
