The story
Ava shares a dorm with Lisa, who brags about rich dates and orders her to send away Jake, the poor transfer student waiting downstairs in the rain. Ava knows better: at the exclusive Azure Crest club she once saw Jake leave a VIP suite while the owner bowed to him. She brings him home, and the next morning he tosses her a signet ring, calling it a worthless fake. Ava recognizes it as the antique a drunken mining tycoon once bragged was worth more than a downtown penthouse, and she presses it back into Jake's palm.
Lisa, now with the trust fund kid Chad, freezes Ava out and warns her off her leftovers. Ava instead seeks Jake out, offering to work extra jobs and support him through his debts. He lets her, and when Lisa shatters a gift from him, her boyfriend's cards are frozen the next day. Ava knits Jake an ugly scarf, and he asks whether she would stay if he were poor forever. She swears she loves him, not his money, while eyeing the Patek Philippe on his nightstand.
Opening
Lisa was on speaker with a rich guy, her fake laugh filling our dorm. "Ugh, that broke loser Jake is waiting downstairs again," she said, glancing at me. "Ava, tell him I'm sick."
I looked outside. To everyone, he was just a poor transfer student. But I knew the truth. Last month, while working at the exclusive Azure Crest club, I saw him leave a VIP suite surrounded by powerful people, with the owner bowing to him.
I threw on a thin white tee—one that turned sheer in the rain—grabbed an umbrella, and went down. The downpour soaked the shirt, clinging to my skin.
