The story
Kate, a department head, takes a day off for her husband's surgery and returns to a five-thousand-dollar fine, announced before the whole office by her manager, Diana. When Diana's new assistant appears wearing a watch worth exactly that sum, Kate understands the fine was never about company morale.
Diana demotes her to junior designer and installs her own niece, Chloe, as the new Head of Design. Chloe imposes daily design quotas, strict attendance and mandatory client logs, while Kate quietly complies, submits her work and leaves on time. But the department's key client, Mr. Harrison of Apex Corp, is due, and the project Kate built has been handed to Chloe.
Kate has stopped resisting. She is simply waiting for the company to discover what it has thrown away.
Opening
When I came back, my manager fined me five thousand dollars in front of the entire office.
"Company policy is crystal clear: group morale takes precedence over everything!" she declared. "Kate, as a department head, you led the charge in defying company rules. Your penalty is doubled!"
The next day, I saw her new assistant, a fresh college grad, sporting a brand-new five-thousand-dollar watch. And just like that, it all clicked.
