The story
Everyone in Solerio knows Francesco Greco, heir to the largest mafia family, is a notorious playboy. Yet when he swears before God to love Mia for the rest of his life, she believes him. For the first year of their marriage he keeps his word, clinging to her at home while his name terrifies the world outside.
By the second year he returns with one lover after another, and Mia becomes the laughingstock of Solerio. So she and Madre Greco strike a bargain: eight more years to see if Francesco changes, and if he does not, she may go. On their eighth anniversary his ninety-ninth lover, Selena Ricci, taunts her at dinner and demands the master bedroom. Mia only smiles, dials Madre Greco, and says it is time for her to leave.
Francesco asks for the wedding ring so Selena can wear it, indulges her at an auction, and shields her when a scandal erupts. When he accuses Mia of humiliating the Greco family, she realizes eight years of marriage have bought her no trust at all.
Opening

He lives up to his words during the first year of our marriage. The Greco heir, whose presence alone terrorizes others, clings to me like a loyal puppy at home.
