The story
On the morning of the SAT, Dominic's girlfriend Ella Simpson insists on retrieving a forgotten admission ticket for her childhood friend, Benedict Casper. In a previous life, Dominic begged her not to go; Benedict missed his final chance at the exam and took his own life. Years later, after both graduated from the Whitmore Institute of Technology and built a picture-perfect marriage, Ella stabbed Dominic on the anniversary of Benedict's death, blaming him for the loss.
Now Dominic has woken on that same exam-day morning. This time he lets Ella go, and calmly ends their relationship at the school gate. When news arrives that Ella and Benedict both missed the exam, Dominic feels only detachment. At a class reunion, the pair arrive together, openly intimate and planning a shared future.
Dominic watches them without regret, certain that this time he will not be the one left behind.
