The story
Riley drags her pregnant best friend Chloe to a check-up at the hospital where her ex-boyfriend, Dr. Leo Shen, works. Leo teases her relentlessly, asking whether the baby is his or hers, and noting he never saw her this happy when they were together. Riley insists she is simply thrilled to become a godmother.
The mood collapses when Chloe's father, Dr. Evans, walks in. Panicked, Chloe blurts out that Riley is the one who is pregnant, and Riley, bound by twenty-three years of friendship, plays along with the lie. Then the door opens again: Riley's own father, Dean Shaw, arrives, and Dr. Evans cheerfully congratulates him on becoming a grandfather.
Now Riley is trapped between her ex, her best friend's father and her own father, with a fake pregnancy she never announced.
Opening
My best friend was pregnant, so of course, the first thing I did was drag her to my ex-boyfriend's hospital for her check-up.
Dr. Leo Shen looked up as I practically bounced into his office, Chloe trailing nervously behind me. A slow, knowing smirk spread across his face as he took in my ridiculously wide grin.
"Yours?" he asked, his tone completely deadpan.
I stopped short, the giddy bubble of my excitement popping. "Huh? What did you just say?"
