The story
After a stroke leaves her father unsteady on his feet, Geraldine Lambert takes him into her home and charges him rent, a care fee and food money. He does the laundry and mops the floors, and when he falters she drives him out, dumps his dinner into the toilet and raises his fees. Her husband Nolan Lambert calls it inhuman, but Geraldine insists this is exactly how she was raised, and her father says nothing against her.
When the neighbors and then her mother-in-law and a houseful of relatives confront her about abusing an old man, Geraldine stands her ground. The relatives on her father's side call him a model father and accuse her of lying, while her mother-in-law threatens to take her grandson away. Cornered, her father refuses to speak against her, calling the matter a private family affair.
Geraldine is satisfied with his silence, but the relatives have seen enough, and the truth behind her childhood is still buried.
Opening
After my father's stroke left him unsteady on his feet, he moved in with me.
I made him pay three thousand a month in rent and two thousand for care. On top of that, he did the laundry and mopped the floors. I didn't let him sit idle.
Once, I caught him slacking off. I shoved him toward the door and drove him out, and only stopped when he was crying and begging my forgiveness.
