The story
Jonathan returns from a week-long business trip to find his fiancée Kate Swanson and her childhood friend Samuel Lambert laughing together in the living room. Muffin, his cat, is shut in a cage, and a grape sits in the cat's bowl. Samuel has let himself in with the front-door password again, unplugged the living room camera, and thrown out the pickles Jonathan's father preserved and delivered. Kate dismisses it all as harmless fun.
It is the thirty-eighth time Kate has leaked the new password to Samuel, and Jonathan no longer intends to change it again. When Samuel presents cheap discounted supplements as an engagement gift, Kate takes his side, and Jonathan's patience finally runs out.
As the argument peaks, Muffin presses against Jonathan's leg, and Kate offers him an obsidian tie clip she picked out while he was away. He is about to take it when he notices something.
Opening
But on the second day, when I check the live footage from the living room surveillance camera, I see my fiancee, Kate Swanson's childhood friend Samuel Lambert enter the password for the front door and walk into the house. Then, he throws a grape into Muffin's bowl.
Samuel Lambert raises an eyebrow in the direction of the surveillance camera. "Hey, Jonathan. Muffin is a smart one, isn't it? It's not touching the grape at all."
Then, as I watch in horror, he unplugs the surveillance camera.
