The story
For eight years, Chloe has lived inside a house her celebrated architect husband Julian designed to perfection — and inside it, she and their son Leo have no room of their own. Leo sleeps in a foldaway crib in the master bedroom; his toys are hidden in a closet drawer; Chloe has no desk. At Julian's annual design gala, he unveils The Haven, a breathtaking villa built for his junior partner Sienna, complete with a private studio, a rooftop garden, and a sunroom made for a cat. Chloe sits in the last row, holding Leo's vaccination record for the appointment Julian promised to attend.
He never comes. Leo, six years old, learns to excuse his absent father, while Sienna wears Chloe's slippers and carries the engraved drafting tube Chloe once gave Julian as an anniversary gift. Julian calls Chloe's silence a tantrum and tells her she knows nothing about design.
A forensic auditor by trade, Chloe begins quietly assembling eight years of financial logs, deeds, and company records — and decides what she will no longer accept.

My husband was the most celebrated architect in the country, yet after eight years of marriage, I didn’t even have a desk of my own.
He spent his days designing multimillion-dollar estates for the city’s elite. But when he came home, all he had to say to me was:
"Why do you need a study? You're an auditor. You can crunch numbers on a laptop anywhere."
