The story
For three years, Willow has believed her boyfriend Alan is a struggling young man she rescued from a hard life. She works three jobs, wears the same trench coat, and saves for a ring, while he cooks for her and whispers that she is too good to him.
Then a flooded subway and a chance detour lead her to a private room where Alan's real world is waiting. He is Alan Hayes, heir to a dynasty, a philanthropist whose generosity is legendary. Through the half-open door she hears his friends laugh about the broke girl he is playing, about his coming engagement to Diana Donovan, and about how Willow always comes crawling back. Alan calls it a game and says she will never find out.
Soaked and unseen, Willow listens as the boy she loves is revealed as a stranger. When he finally appears with a cake and an easy smile, she must decide what to do with the ring in her pocket and the truth she was never meant to hear.
Opening
The third year Alan and I were crammed into that tiny apartment was the year the floodwaters took our home.
I buried my face in his shoulder, miserable and shivering.
He told me it broke his heart to see me this way. Then he turned around and donated a hundred million dollars to the city’s relief fund without batting an eye.
On the news, he was Alan Hayes: heir to a dynasty, a philanthropist whose casual generosity was legendary. He was a stranger to me.
