The story
Ethan Luster has spent years supporting his parents, buying them furniture and paying for his mother Lucy Carter's lung cancer medication. On his birthday, he takes her to a jewelry store and buys her the gold bracelet she has always wanted, expecting her to be proud.
Instead, Lucy accuses him of scheming and taking advantage of his brother Henry Luster, complaining that Ethan never repaid Henry for a plate of pancakes. She has a gold necklace brought out for Henry and expects Ethan to pay for it, while his father Isaac Luster later tosses him five dollars and orders him to apologize. Told he is no different from a hired caretaker, Ethan reaches his limit.
He gives the bracelet to his wife Evelyn Gilbert, redirects the new furniture he bought for his parents, and stops paying for his mother's medication, choosing instead the family waiting at home.
Opening
"Honestly speaking, you really know how to take advantage of others. Previously, Henry treated us to some pancakes, but you still haven't wired him your share of the money."
