The story
Before marching off to war, Sebastian Crawford swore a blood vow to return and marry her with a grand ceremony. Eight years later he comes home a celebrated general—with Lena at his side, a pregnant woman who dresses like a soldier and calls herself his brother in arms. Calmly, she slips off her engagement ring and ends the engagement.
Sebastian refuses to let it go. He installs Lena in the guesthouse, dismisses the locket her dying father gave him as a piece of metal, and cuts down the magnolia tree her father planted with his last breath. When Charles Crane arrives with a marriage contract, Lena wears the jewels meant for her and Sebastian smashes what she does not want.
As the household falls apart, Lena presses a sword to her maid's throat. She seizes Sebastian's blade and holds it to his neck, demanding the maid be freed—while Lena asks whether she can truly kill him first.
Opening
Eight years later, Sebastian returned as a general, draped in glory. But by his side was a woman—dressed like a man, her very pregnant belly sticking out like a sore thumb.
I took a deep breath, calmly slipped off my engagement ring, and called the whole thing off.
Sebastian scowled, clearly annoyed.
"Lena bled with me on the battlefield. I've always seen her as a brother in arms. She's pregnant because she helped me take care of a physical need.
