The story
Two years after she ended things with Evan Grey, a young woman's lung cancer reaches its final stage. She travels alone to Lake Manco, the place they once promised to visit on the 999th day of their love, and buries the pendant he gave her by the water. But Evan appears at the lake with Jane Starling, the woman his mother once chose for him, and coldly claims he does not know her.
When a reservation mix-up traps Evan and Jane at the lake, they end up sharing her car and then her hotel, Hotel Santiago. Evan's practiced tenderness toward Jane cuts deep, while the painkillers she hides in the car and the syringe she uses in secret hint at how little time she has left. She insists she never regretted the breakup, even as her body and heart give way.
That night, insistent knocking pulls her from her sickbed: Evan and Jane, asking to use her shower.
