The story
While vacationing with her mother in San Aria Bay, Jeannie receives a photo from her husband's secretary, Linda Rogers, showing a bloodied woman and a message accusing her mother of freeloading. Jeannie realizes the victim is actually her mother-in-law. When she calls her husband, Nash Smith, he dismisses her, siding with Linda and calling her mother greedy.
Jeannie rushes home to find a body under a sheet in the yard, where Nash is hosting a welcome party for his mother. Linda claims the woman's heart gave out, and Nash coldly blames Jeannie's mother. His sister Shirley Smith and the gathered relatives mock the dead woman, praising Linda as a hero.
As Nash tosses a settlement agreement at her feet, Jeannie warns him to lift the sheet and see who is really dead, while he refuses, certain it is only her mother.
Opening
I was in San Aria Bay with my mom, enjoying a quiet, sunlit getaway, when my phone suddenly lit up with a string of messages from my husband's ever-arrogant secretary.
She sent a photo.
The woman in it had been stripped naked, her body covered in blood, the sight almost unbearable.
A voice message followed, her tone dripping with disdain.
