The story
Chloe has known since childhood that her family has no money for illness, so she keeps every ache to herself. When a school checkup reveals cancer and she is told she has three months left, she runs home with the diagnosis, hoping her parents will finally care for her the way they dote on her frail brother Felix. Instead, her mother tears the paper apart and slaps her, and her father dismisses it as a lie.
Her parents then push her to volunteer for a paid drug trial meant for healthy subjects, forcing a red pill into her mouth and locking her in her room for a three-day observation period. As her body fails, she calls for help through the door, but they leave to take Felix to the hospital. She dies alone, and her spirit watches them eat cake without her, call the diagnosis a forgery, and threaten her cat Whiskers to make her speak.
When the cat falls from the balcony and a crowd gathers below, her mother worries only about reputation.
Opening
I knew from a young age that our family didn’t have money.
Getting sick cost money, so I wasn’t even allowed to get sick.
When I was four, I ran a high fever. Mom grabbed me and stuffed me into the freezer.
When she pulled me out, I was still conscious, blinking up at her.
My face was freezing. My tears had frozen solid.
Mom glanced at me and said irritably, “You’re just faking it to skip school. See? You didn’t die.”
After that day, I kept every discomfort to myself.
I thought Mom was right—I must have been faking it.
