The story
Arthur Blackwood, once a celebrated painter and the privileged eldest son of the Blackwood family, sees his life collapse after he punishes Aiden, his wife Eleanor Brooks's male assistant, by making him a manservant for three days over a ruined painting. Eleanor's company files for bankruptcy, and Arthur spends three years working endless jobs, dodging creditors and selling his blood to survive.
Then he overhears Eleanor, who should still be imprisoned, hosting a lavish birthday party for Aiden. She reveals the bankruptcy and his ruin were her punishment all along, and that she plans to fake a comeback and keep him as her husband. Grace Sloane's questions only confirm the deception.
Stripped of pride and living in a damp basement, Arthur resolves to return everything to Eleanor, twofold.
