The story
Norma has always been protected by two people: her husband James Sterling, a special forces captain, and her best friend Kate, the team's medic. The pair bicker endlessly, yet both dote on her, and she believes her marriage is the greatest fortune of her life.
Five months pregnant, Norma finds a heavy iron box among James's belongings in their military housing. Inside are seven hundred and thirty-two last letters, written before every dangerous mission. Every one begins and ends with the name Kate. In them, James confesses that Kate is the one he loves most, that he married Norma only out of pity, and that if he falls, everything goes to Kate.
As James and Kate carry her to the hospital, their concern looks utterly genuine, yet the letters have already changed everything Norma thought she knew about the two people she trusted most.
Opening
My best friend and James Sterling had been sworn enemies for twenty years, constantly bickering whenever they met. He was a special forces captain; she was the accompanying medic. The only thing they agreed on was to obey my every word. Everyone would laugh, calling them my ‘left and right-hand protectors.’
Until five months into my pregnancy, when I was tidying up James’s old belongings in our military housing, I found a heavy iron box.
