The story
After gaining admission to New York University, Nora abruptly cuts ties with her struggling father, Anderson. A year later, he rises again and adopts a daughter more obedient than she ever was. During a New Year's live stream, Nora calls in to wish him well, but he coldly disowns her, saying he hopes never to hear from her again. The host then reveals the truth: Nora's message was pre-recorded, and she has already passed away.
As the stream continues, her final song plays and footage shows her outside a hospital's oncology department, where she hides her medical record. She suffers from a rare cancer, wild-type rectal cancer with fetal differentiation adenocarcinoma, with only a year to live. She chose to sever ties so she would not drag her father down, even as the world brands her ungrateful.
Nora agrees to film a documentary, shaves her head, and recalls how Anderson once ate plain noodles while saving meat for her breakfast and secretly delivered food at night. She wonders what he would do if he knew about her illness, knowing he would sell his blood and kidney for her.
Opening
A year later, he bounced back and adopted a daughter who was more obedient and charming than I ever was.
During a New Year's live stream, I requested to connect live to send him my wishes:
“Happy New Year, Dad. I hope you find peace, health, happiness, and joy.”
He scoffed:
“Don’t call me Dad. I don’t have a daughter like you!”
I lowered my gaze, holding back tears, but kept smiling:
“I’m sorry, this will be the last time I call you Dad.”
He sneered:
“The last time? I hope it’s the last time before you die.”
