The story

When a drunk rich boy speeds down a campus pedestrian walkway, he shatters the femur of Aubrey Carlisle and leaves her unconscious in the ICU. At the hospital, her mother keeps a three-day vigil, staring at photos of three girls broken like dolls.

The driver's mother, Regina Whitley, arrives with a settlement agreement and a smirk, offering medical expenses plus two million dollars and telling Ms. Carlisle to sign and not hold up her son's future. She flaunts a globally limited black card, boasting that she buried the story and that her husband has already hired Vincent Pryor, Crestborne Group's chief legal counsel.

Then Ms. Carlisle recognizes the card's pattern: it is the supplementary card she gave her husband, Dominic Sinks. As another victim's parents are pressured to sign, she stands up, refuses to let them, and offers to cover their child's treatment herself. She tells Regina she wants to buy her son's life and asks her to name the price.

Opening

Now the boy's mother wants to settle. She sits across from me with her chin lifted and slides a settlement agreement across the table. "Ms. Carlisle, just sign it and don't hold up my son's future."

Rage burns through every last shred of my composure. I grab the document and hurl it in her face. "Not a chance!"

She doesn't even flinch. Her lips curl into a smirk, and she looks me up and down. "The law says you only have to pay about a million if you kill someone. Your daughter isn't even dead.
