The story
Leo has always had an enormous appetite, but his father refuses to believe it. When Leo eats, his father accuses him of faking hunger to compete with his younger brother for attention, and punishes him with slaps and insults. His brother quietly encourages the accusations, dumping food he does not want into the trash while Leo is blamed for wanting more.
Brought back to live with his parents after years apart, Leo finds his food allowance slashed and his father's contempt growing. At a relative's birthday buffet, his father shames him in front of the whole family; when Leo tries to enter a fried chicken eating challenge, his father calls it a disgrace and storms off.
Hungry every day and mocked even for accepting a classmate's leftovers, Leo must endure a family that sees his hunger as a crime.
Opening
The year I hit my peak as a competitive eater—pure, unadulterated hunger—I could put away ten burgers in one sitting.
For my sixteenth birthday, my parents asked me what I wanted for a gift.
I told them I wanted to go to an all-you-can-eat luxury buffet.
It had been so long since I'd felt full.
Seeing me drooling with anticipation, my dad instantly lost his temper.
"Leo, why do you always have to act like your mother and I mistreat you?!"
