The story
When Vivian Harper fails a course by a single point, her best friend Chloe drags her out for a night of drinking that ends in a blackout. She wakes beside a controlled, cool-eyed stranger, leaves two hundred dollars on the nightstand, and flees. On the first day of the new semester, the class she failed has a new professor: Adrian Sinclair, the man from that night, who coolly summons her to his office.
There, Adrian produces a pregnancy test bound into her term paper — Chloe's lab report, slipped into her bag, which Vivian accidentally submitted. Before she can explain, Adrian assumes the child is his, forbids any impulsive decision, and makes her his research assistant, tutoring her daily. Vivian cannot reveal the truth: Chloe's ex captains the baseball team, and his family's connections could drive her from school.
Trapped in a misunderstanding she cannot correct, Vivian endures Adrian's strangely attentive care — warm milk, no all-nighters, a heated lecture hall — while dreading the moment the truth comes out.
Opening
When I missed the passing grade by one point, my best friend dragged me to a bar.
She said there was nothing a drink couldn't fix.
I drank until I blacked out. When I woke up, a man lay beside me, all cool eyes and tightly leashed control.
I left two hundred dollars on the nightstand and ran for my life.
I thought I'd never see him again. Then, on the first day of the new semester, the class I'd failed had a new professor.
I looked up at the podium.
