The story

To clear her family's eight-million-dollar debt, Chloe married Garrett Vance, a coal mining tycoon she looked down on. She spent his money freely and ruled his mansion, while he only smiled and told her the coal was all hers to spend. Then a cave-in at the West Virginia mines killed him the night before Christmas Eve.

Relieved, Chloe prepared to fly to Los Angeles alone. But his lawyer, Mr. Lawson, arrived with a key to Garrett's safe: a debit card holding fifty million dollars, audited clean, with a note telling her to take it to LA and live the life she wanted. Before she could leave, Garrett's Uncle Silas and a crowd of relatives forced their way in, demanding the fortune and calling her a gold-digger.

Chloe refused to be cowed. She threw scalding coffee at Silas, called the police on speakerphone, and declared herself Garrett's sole beneficiary, warning the intruders that armed home invasion carries prison time. As they were led away, the mansion fell silent, and Chloe was left alone with the cold card and the quiet Garrett had never let her have.

He wanted me because I was a beautiful, Ivy League-educated girl. I wanted him because his bank account was a bottomless pit of cash.

I despised his lack of culture. I hated the way he smacked his lips when he chewed. Armed with his black card, I ruled his mansion like a tyrant.

Yet, whenever I maxed out his credit cards, he would just smile warmly and say, "You look so beautiful, Chloe.
